Najib first PM to attend Dong Zhong CNY do

KAJANG: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak today paid a historic visit to the Chinese New Year open house hosted by Chinese education group Dong Zhong (United Chinese School Committees Association of Malaysia) , becoming the first prime minister to do so.

He was greeted warmly by Dong Zong president Dr Yap Sin Tian at the Dong Jiao Zong Higher Learning Centre, and was treated to a lion dance performance upon his arrival at 9.45am.

Also present were MCA president  Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek,  Health Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department and Gerakan president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon, and Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.

Decked in a festive red shirt, Najib joined some 3,000 guests in the celebrations, taking part in a Yee Sang tossing ceremony and Chinese caligraphy demonstration.

The calligraphy session was also joined by Yap, Dong Zong deputy chairman  Chow Siew Hon, United Chinese School Teachers Association (Jiao Zong) chairman Ong Chiow Chuen and Merdeka University Berhad chairman Foo Wan Thot.

Chow said the prime minister's presence was a good start towards enhancing further Chinese education in the country.

"The prime minister's presence at our function shows his sincerity and we are delighted with his presence," he said.
