Hua Lo Geng(华罗庚)

Hua Lo Geng ( 华罗庚 12 November 1910 - 12 June 1985 ) was a Chinese mathematician born in Jintan, Jiangsu. After graduating from Jintan Junior High School, Hua Lo Geng taught himself diligently. Hua Lo Geng did not receive any formal university education. Although awarded several honorary PhDs, he had never been awarded a formal degree from any university. He was the founder and poineer in many fields in mathematical research. He has written more than 150 papers and monographs, many of which have become classics documents of immeasurable value. He has published 9 literary works ,among them are "Additive Theory Of Prime Numbers", "Introduction To Number Theory", "Classical Groups" (co-writer with Wan Zhexian) ,etc.

In 1946, Hua accepted appointment as full professor at the University of lllinois Urbana-Champaign. In 1950, the People's Republic of China was established, and Hua wanting to be part of a new epoch, decided to return to China with his wife and children, despite having settled comfortably in the United States. Besides pure mathematics research, Hua also did a lot of work in the fields of mathematics applications. He incorporated mathematics into the national economy and became the first Chinese scientist who closely combined mathematics theories studies and practical production, and obtained enormous economic results in many fields. Young mathematicians are such as Chengdong Pan (潘承洞), Yuan Wang (王元) and Jingrun Chen (陈景润) are some of Hua Lo Geng's outstanding student.
