This paper aims to promote our knowledge of the Chinese writing system from a comparative viewpoint with two other local writing systems, that is, the Malay and English languages in Malaysia. The traditional understanding of the Chinese writing system -- its origin, evolution, structure and variation - concerns etymology and morphology in linguistics. The Chinese writing system, from a morphological point of view, is formatted absolutely by 'compounding' two or more free morphemes / characters (or'huiyi' in the Chinese writing system). Malay and English, on the other hand, are formed mainly by 'affixation' (or ‘zhishi’). The nature of the Chinese writing system, its differences and similarities with the Malay and English writing systems can be better explained by this etymological and : morphological approach.
