BACKGROUND

The transformation of media and communication studies from journalism education in the 1970s to the current media education has experienced tremendous changes. The media education in Malaysia has not only developed into various niche specialization such as broadcasting, advertising, public relations, corporate communication and film studies but also has crossed the boundary of using various languages such as English, Malays and Chinese as the teaching medium. However, the advancement of digital technology has changed the media consumption pattern in the 21st century. In view of this, there is a need to revisit and fill the voids on the current media education in Malaysia to project its new position and direction. Thus, it gives us several points to ponder: How do the traditional media education in this country transform, change and develop in contemporary digital age? How do the media educators accommodate the digital technology in their teaching in order to prepare their students to the current job market? Hence, the Symposium of Malaysian Media Education 2018 provides a platform for scholarly discussion and exchange of ideas pertaining to the issues related to the challenges faced by Malaysian media education, particularly in this digital age.
