The Graduate School sees it as its mission to provide a research environment in which senior scholars can work together with graduate students to address issues of national and regional import. In order to inspire such students, the Tan Kai Hee Foundation has generously endowed the School with a grant of RM 100,000 to provide an annual Award, to be known as the Tan Kai Hee and Tan Siow Eng Award, to outstanding graduate students pursuing research that bear the imprint of his values, and can bring our country forward in the quest for a more just and harmonious society.
The Award will entail a partial tuition waiver, but its real value lies in the reputation that will accrue to the holder and the School, as it symbolises the spirit of personal excellence and public commitment associated with the name and person of Mr Tan Kai Hee and Mdm Tan Siow Eng.
There will be no applications for the Award. A Selection Committee set up by the Graduate School, which will include two representatives appointed by Mr Tan Kai Hee, will be responsible for the selection. In the event that there is no candidate eligible for such an Award in any particular year or years, the fund will be kept for subsequent years for eligible candidates. There will be a public announcement of the Award holders every year.
