Year 1 Semester 1
Research Methodology
This course introduces and discusses approaches, strategies, and data collection methods relating to research in social sciences that focuses on quantitative and qualitative research methods. Candidates will consider how to select the appropriate methodology for use in a study to be performed. Candidates will learn to set objectives, frame the study through research questions, define the scope and limitations of their research, and plan their research design. Methods of interpretation and application of theoretical frameworks will also be discussed. Candidate will employ specific method in the design and implementation of their research study which they will present orally and as a written formal research for their thesis.
Qualitative Research Methods
This course provides students with a comprehensive overview of theory and practice in qualitative research methods. Attention will be given to the application of qualitative methods for high-quality research. Course topics include ethics in conducting qualitative methodology, different strategies of inquiries, various techniques of collecting empirical materials (interview methods, being an observer in a research environment, dealing with visual material in qualitative research) and advanced tools in qualitative data analysis. This module will be delivered online with mix mode of synchronous and asynchronous. Supporting materials will be provided in TIMES and extra seminar/webinars will be provided to enhance the students learning. The assessments are carefully designed to cover all course learning outcomes and to help students complete the methodology chapter effectively.
Quantitative Research Methods
This module covers various methods used in quantitative research. Students will learn how to interpret the statistical results contained in scholarly papers and articles. Students will learn how to apply these methods using statistical software through hands-on analysis of research data sets. Topics include survey design; experimental design; statistical analysis of survey and experimental data; multivariate statistical analysis including analysis of variance, multiple regression. Highlights of advance structural equation modelling using different analyzing softwares will also be used to demonstrate the process and interpretation.
