The Department of Psychology and Counseling (formerly the Department of Guidance and Counseling Psychology) was established in 2006 and has become an important training base for psychological counseling talent in the Malaysian Chinese community. The development history of the department is as follows:
2003: Launched the Diploma in Guidance and Counselling program, laying the foundation for psychological counseling education.
2009: Collaborated with National Taiwan Normal University to introduce the 2+2 credit transfer program, enhancing internationalization.
2010: Jointly organized an overseas Master program in Guidance and Counselling with National Changhua University of Education to deepen professional talent development.
2014: Partnered with Shu-Te University to launch an overseas Master program in Human Sexuality for in-service professionals, expanding the counseling field.
2016: Upgraded to University College status, authorized to offer homegrown degree programs, while the previous programs were discontinued.
2017: Introduced the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Counselling program, improving the undergraduate qualification system.
2025: Introduced the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Psychology program, strengthening interdisciplinary integration between psychology and counseling.
Future Plans: Preparing to offer master’s programs related to psychology and counseling to further enhance the level of professional talent development.
✅ Quality Faculty: The department has a team of experienced teachers who balance academic and practical knowledge, ensuring high teaching quality.
✅ Course Features: The curriculum combines localized and international elements; the counseling program meets the certification standards of the Malaysian Counsellor Board (LKM), while the psychology program adheres to the Malaysian MQA psychology program standards.
✅ Social Contribution: For many years, the department has provided professional talent to Chinese independent schools, Chinese primary schools, and counseling organizations in the Chinese community, with over 30 graduates from the counseling program accredited as registered counsellor qualifications from the Malaysian Counsellor Board (Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia).
The department will continue to optimize the curriculum system, promote the professional development in psychology and counseling, and strive to become a significant training center for psychologist and counsellors in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

“Mommy, I want to study psychology!”
“Huh! Are you going to end up with a mental illness after studying that?”
Five years ago, right after receiving my SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) results, I told my mother that I wanted to study psychology. Even though I didn’t fully understand the difference between psychology and counselling back then, my mother was skeptical and was worried about my choice. Nevertheless, she accompanied me to explore this course with an open mind.
During my studies, I went through a lot of trials and tribulations, along with both sweet and bitter experiences, full of sweat and tears. But I finally made it and now I have graduated!
I am grateful to my parents who unconditionally supported me throughout my studies. I am also thankful to my teachers, who provided me with many opportunities, encouraged me to strive for excellence, and helped me to overcome my limitations. Moreover, I am grateful to a group of university friends who gave me the greatest understanding and tolerance, enabling me to complete my studies smoothly. I will always remember our slogan during tough times: “We can do it! We definitely can!”
After graduation, I immediately secured a job that I was satisfied with. Not long after, I applied for a license from the Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia. I passed the interview and finally successfully obtained the recognition as a registered counselor. Graduating with a Bachelor’s degree is never my final destination, but rather a new beginning for my professional journey. I am now pursuing a Master’s degree and will continue to grow professionally.

During the four years of studying for my bachelor’s degree, the concept of helping others and self-help has been firmly implanted in my studies and life. To learn to heal others, you need to heal yourself first. Four years of study is a process of self-awareness. The arrangement of the courses allows me to conduct in-depth self-exploration and self-reflection while learning professional counselling and psychological knowledge and theories, so as to lay a solid foundation for becoming a professional counsellor.
Only through practice can the theories learnt be applied. This programme provided opportunities for me to practice and apply the knowledge I gained. The counselling internship in a primary school further strengthened my goal of becoming a counsellor. I also discovered my enthusiasm for helping others and have finally successfully obtained a license as a registered counselor.
Looking back on the past few years, my journey of learning was filled with pain and joy. When I was overwhelmed with stress, I had the encouragement and support from the lecturers, as well as the support from my peers.

Do you know what it feels like to follow your heart and choose what you truly love?
In 2017, despite the objections and discouragement from my family members, I took a leap of faith and switched from the Bachelor of Accounting programme at University to enroll in the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Counselling at New Era University College (NEUC). My mom, my sisters, and even my aunts, no one understood my decision, and they were all against it. I felt immense pressure at the time, and there were moments when I questioned myself and worried about the consequences of making the wrong choice.
But, as it turned out, following my heart was the best decision I ever made.
I am grateful that I had the courage to trust my instincts. The moment I stepped onto the NEUC campus and walked into my first class, I felt a sense of belonging that I had never felt before. The class atmosphere, the lecturers’ teaching style, the course content, and the assignment formats all spoke to me on a deep level. I knew at that moment that I had made the right choice.
If you ask me how was my university life? I would say it was a time of self-discovery and growth. I wrote “reflection reports” about the different stages of my life, sharing my stories with peers and shedding tears alongside them. We faced challenges together and supported each other through thick and thin, year after year. Now, we are scattered to different places, working hard on our internships.
Choosing to pursue my passion for counselling was not an easy path, but it was the one that filled me with joy and purpose. The story of my university life is fascinating and brief. This journey allowed me to overcome my shyness and let me express myself more fully. It gave me a deep sense of self-awareness that I carry with me to this day.
I would say New Era University College’s counselling programme was my second youth where I witnessed my own growth. Looking back on all the experiences and memories I’ve gained, I felt a mixture of emotions–gratitude for the opportunities I’ve had, pride in my achievements, and a sense of nostalgia for the chapter of my life that has ended.
At last, my life story now has a chapter called “Transformation”.
So, if you’re wondering what it feels like to follow your heart and pursue what you love? It’s a deep sense of fulfillment and appreciation for having the courage to take the road less travelled.
