Overview

The Department of Psychology and Counseling (formerly the Department of Guidance and Counseling Psychology) was established in 2006 and has become an important training base for psychological counseling talent in the Malaysian Chinese community. The development history of the department is as follows:

2003: Launched the Diploma in Guidance and Counselling program, laying the foundation for psychological counseling education.

2009: Collaborated with National Taiwan Normal University to introduce the 2+2 credit transfer program, enhancing internationalization.

2010: Jointly organized an overseas Master program in Guidance and Counselling with National Changhua University of Education to deepen professional talent development.

2014: Partnered with Shu-Te University to launch an overseas Master program in Human Sexuality for in-service professionals, expanding the counseling field.

2016: Upgraded to University College status, authorized to offer homegrown degree programs, while the previous programs were discontinued.

2017: Introduced the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Counselling program, improving the undergraduate qualification system.

2025: Introduced the Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) in Psychology program, strengthening interdisciplinary integration between psychology and counseling.

Future Plans: Preparing to offer master’s programs related to psychology and counseling to further enhance the level of professional talent development.

✅ Course Features: The curriculum combines localized and international elements; the counseling program meets the certification standards of the Malaysian Counsellor Board (LKM), while the psychology program adheres to the Malaysian MQA psychology program standards.

✅ Social Contribution: For many years, the department has provided professional talent to Chinese independent schools, Chinese primary schools, and counseling organizations in the Chinese community, with over 30 graduates from the counseling program accredited as registered counsellor qualifications from the Malaysian Counsellor Board (Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia).

 

Future Outlook

The department will continue to optimize the curriculum system, promote the professional development in psychology and counseling, and strive to become a significant training center for psychologist and counsellors in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
