The Department of Guidance and Counselling Psychology of New Era University College was officially established in 2006. Since then, the Diploma in Guidance and Counselling programme, which was managed by the former Centre for Continuing Education, was upgraded to a 2+2 Credit Transfer Degree Programme between (then) New Era College and the National Taiwan Normal University. The 2+2 Credit Transfer Degree Programme was then provisionally accredited in 2009. In 2017, New Era College was upgraded to New Era University College, and the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Counselling Programme (BCP) was launched in May 2017. Following graduation, BCP graduates will be able to apply for a professional license from Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia (Board of Counsellors of Malaysia). NEUC is the first private university in Malaysia to offer a bachelor’s degree programme in counselling.
The Department of Guidance and Counselling Psychology is responsible for cultivating high-quality professional counsellors with multilingual skills for the nation. Hence, the course provides a professional curriculum taught by competent lecturers. The core of this course focuses on the humanistic quality of the counsellor.
Based on the close relationship with Chinese society, our department has provided many counsellors for schools and counselling organizations over the years. Under regulations set by the Ministry of Education, each school is required to have a counsellor for every 500 students. Hence, the demand for counsellors is increasing rapidly. Moreover, graduates are able to utilize their skills as a counsellor in various settings. For example, graduates may serve as a civil servant (Pegawai Psikologi), a counsellor in private hospitals, in community counselling centres, in funeral services, and in private practices.
The Department of Guidance and Counselling Psychology has been co-organizing the National Secondary School Peer Counselling Camp with the NEUC Counselling Centre for several years. In addition, the department has cooperated with Sin Chew Daily, the Institute of Ageing and Professional Care, the Kendek Foundation, the Malaysia Chinese Community Counselling Association, and other institutions to promote the development of local counselling education. At the same time, with the aim of cultivating high-quality and competitive professional counsellors, the department will continue to develop and provide more progressive and complete courses to become an influential counselling institute.
Our Vision
To develop as an institution of higher learning that cultivates professional counsellors in Malaysia; To become the premier counselling organization in Asia.
