Introduction

Tey Shi Bin was born in 1984 in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, with ancestral roots in Yongchun, Fujian, and currently resides in Selangor. She graduated with First-Class Honours from the Department of Chinese Studies, University of Malaya. She was awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship, a full scholarship for master’s studies in China, upon the joint recommendation of the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, and the Department of Chinese Studies, University of Malaya. In 2010, she obtained her master’s degree in Ancient Chinese Literature from Central China Normal University, China. In 2014, with a scholarship, she continued her doctoral studies at the same university and received her PhD in Chinese Classical Philology. Both her master’s and doctoral theses received university-level Outstanding Thesis Awards, and she was also awarded the honour of Outstanding Graduating International Student.

After graduation, she immediately joined the Department of Chinese Language and Literature at New Era University College (NEUC) as a full-time lecturer. In January 2018, she was promoted to Deputy Head of the Department. On 1 April 2019, she was appointed Founding Dean of the Institute of International Education, where she was responsible for exploring and developing the university’s international initiatives. In June 2020, she concurrently assumed the role of Director of the Marketing and Sales Department, and on 1 August 2023, she established the Branding and Creative Department. In January 2024, she was promoted to Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Corporate Development). In terms of academic rank, she was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022. In April 2025, she was appointed Visiting Professor at Soka University, Japan.

Her book publications include “A Study of Novels in the Zi Section Recorded in Qing Shigao: Yiwen Zhi, Its Supplement, and Addendum” (sole author), “The Translation Annotation and Commentary on The Dream Pool Essays” (co-author), “A Descriptive Bibliography of Electronic Resources for Classical Chinese Texts” (contributing author) and “A Collection of University Addresses by Daisaku Ikeda (Chinese edition)” (Editor-in-Chief). She has also published more than 20 academic papers in major journals in Malaysia and abroad, including CSSCI-indexed journals in China. She has delivered and hosted more than 130 lectures and events, served as a judge/reviewer on nearly 20 occasions, and received several literary awards. She has also served as a columnist for “China Press – Feature” as well as a brand copywriting consultant and copywriter. As a certified trainer under Malaysia’s Ministry of Human Resources (TTT, Train the Trainer), she has taught courses and training sessions on classical texts and modern management, copywriting, and brand marketing. She advocates using modern and creative approaches to revitalise classical knowledge and highlight the beauty of the Chinese language. She is committed to preserving Chinese culture, supporting the development of Chinese education, promoting the use of Chinese in Malaysia, and advancing cultural communication.
